First Book is teaming up with Newbery Medalist Kwame Alexander and his new nonprofit, One Word at a Time, to host a nationwide Literacy Pep Rally. Taking place virtually on September 16 at 1 p.m. ET, the free 30-minute live event will feature storytelling, games, and opportunities for conversation among upper-elementary and middle-grade students and educators across the country. Alexander will be joined by fellow authors Jerry Craft, Kate DiCamillo, and Shifa Safadi. Ensuring accessibility, an ASL interpreter will also be available.
At the close of the program, Alexander will announce the upcoming Author Study series of virtual author visits, slated to take place throughout the 2025–2026 school year, featuring Alan Gratz, Erin Entrada Kelly, Karyn Parsons, Andrea Pinkney, Grace Lin, and R.L. Toalson.
Kyle Zimmer, president, CEO, and co-founder of First Book, said in a statement, “Events like these create unforgettable moments where kids feel seen, inspired, and connected to books and reading in a whole new way. We are proud to partner with Kwame and One Word at a Time to bring authors directly into classrooms and help foster a culture of reading.”
Tori Bachman, executive director of One Word at a Time, added, “Our goal is simple: get kids excited about reading and writing for the year ahead. When kids are excited about reading, they read more—and when they read more, their school engagement and achievement improve—as does their overall well-being.”
The deadline to register for the event is Monday, September 15 at noon ET. For more information, click here.
